Post-Meridian is a Nocturne for 2001. Sontext commissioned a
composer to write a piece for a live violin performance with the
intention of creating a juxtaposition of the sounds of the instrument
against the backdrop of a natural outdoor environment. The performer
provides his own interpretation of the atonal violin composition while
responding to the pre-recorded "nature" sounds generated by Sontext.
The violinist is visible only on a Plasma screen, seemingly absent from
the live performance. The only proof of his presence(in an isolated
room) is through the exchange of musical/non-musical ideas between him
and the fabricated sounds that will be audible throughout the space.
The physical absence of the musician reflects an increasing awareness
of a lack of necessity for live instrumentalists in audio performances.
(the piece was performed at the New Museum's Media Z Lounge in May, 2001)
